A picture of the plateau and mound
The plateau we have described in the last posts is large and more or less impossible to catch in one picture.
This picture was taken from the west in March 2011. To the left you can see how the mound raises itself on the crest. You can also see how the Late Medieval church wall (renovated in the 19th c.) runs up on the plateau. On the right are also a few large pits visible. At this point we cannot say if they are gravel pits, remains of cellars or something else. In for example the East Mound was a large Medieval brick kiln found in 1847. It forced the excavators to find another way into the mound in order reach the burial.
